“Love your neighbor” is one of the most well-known commands of Scripture. Even in our largely secular society, this command is often used by non-believers often as a weapon against believers. Should a believer highlight teachings of Scripture that show us where we are guilty of sin, this command played like the ace of spades…the trump card that puts other arguments to rest.
However, those who study Scripture, who seek to understand the whole counsel of God, and who recognize that Scripture never contradicts itself, see the error of the way this command is being twisted. What does it look like to love our neighbor? Does it mean full acceptance of all they do? Do we ever have to correct or confront someone we love? Did Jesus ever, in love, call people to repent of their sins?
These questions won’t be fully fleshed out in a newsletter or an article, but last week’s article by Amy Hornbuckle is a good place to start.
