Life, Liberty, and Happiness are Pursuing You
I don’t mean to poke our British readers1, but in the United States, the Fourth of July is a big deal. In the second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence, we read the lines, “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
With respect to the “all men are created equal” line, may God forgive us for the ways these lines were not true when they were written, and may God help them to be more true in our future than they even are in the present.
I also want to mention something that encourages me about the last set of phrases, the ones about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As wonderful as it is to be able to pursue these things, the good news of the Christian message is actually much better than the opportunity to merely pursue life and liberty and happiness. The message of Christianity declares that life and liberty and happiness are pursuing you all of your days. Life, liberty, and happiness has a name: Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man.
If you are in the United States, I hope you enjoy your freedom today. But more than the freedoms our country affords us, may we enjoy the happiness that comes from Jesus, “the Son of Man [who] came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10).
